The Richard A. Berman Leadership Award for Human Rights

The Richard A. Berman Leadership Award for Human Rights honors the longstanding commitment and dedication of Richard Berman, former president of Manhattanville College, to the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center. This award recognizes President Berman's commitment to community service and the education of ethically and socially responsible leaders.

Nomination Criteria:

  • Candidates must show promise of leadership through their accomplishments and meaningful contributions to their communities.
  • Candidates must demonstrate interpersonal skills in activities, projects or clubs that promote human rights.
  • Candidates should exemplify values consistent with ethical behavior.

The Neil Ginsberg Student Upstander Award

This award is in recognition of the contributions and commitment made by Neil Ginsberg to the Human Rights Institute for High School Student Leaders.  Neil taught social studies at Scarsdale High School for over 35 years and was a dedicated member of HHREC’s Educators Program Committee.

Nomination Criteria:

  • Candidates should be dedicated to promoting activities related to human rights issues in their schools and/or communities.
  • Candidates have been facilitators at the annual Human Rights Institute for High School or Middle School Institutes for Student Leaders.
  • Candidates should reflect the qualities of an upstander. They are caring, empathetic, dedicated, and display courage and conviction.

The Andy Cahn Student Community Service Award

This award is in memory of the contributions and commitment made by Andy Cahn, former Assistant Director of Education for the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center.  Andy was instrumental in the creation of the High School Human Rights Institute for Student Leaders and skillfully guided the event for its first ten years. This award recognizes Andy’s commitment to giving back to his community which was a cornerstone of his life.

Nomination Criteria:

  • Candidates should be engaged in community service outside the school setting in their local communities or beyond.
  • Candidates should exemplify values consistent with ethical behavior.
