“The Jewish Refugees Whose Intelligence Helped Win the War: Camp Ritchie and Its Graduates”

Professor David Frey, Professor of History and Founding Director of the Stewart and Lynda Resnick Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies, West Point, will speak at this annual Holocaust Remembrance Lecture presented by Purchase College and the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center.

Professor Frey will discuss the remarkable story of the World War II Military Intelligence Training Center (MITC) at Camp Ritchie, Maryland, which recruited refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe, including several thousand Jews, to help the war effort. It ultimately graduated over 15,000 soldiers who made substantial contributions to the success of the Allied war effort in every theater. Other recruits included Native Americans, African Americans, women, artists, intellectuals, and Japanese Americans who came from internment camps.
