HHREC MemoryKeeper Story Hour: Joan Halperin
The HHREC MemoryKeeper Story Hour will feature a presentation by Joan Arnay Halperin. Joan will share the story of her parents’ remarkable transcontinental path to survival that she developed while doing research for her book My Sister’s Eyes: a Family Chronicle of Rescue and Loss During World War II, as she learned of her family’s debt to Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese Consul General in Bordeaux, France. Halperin’s parents, Ignas Krakowiak of Warsaw and Halina “Hala” Kaplan of Lodz, met on a blind date, got married in Łódź in 1935, and moved from Poland to Brussels, believing Belgium was a country welcoming to Jews. As they later learned, they were far from safe, and had many obstacles to experience on their incredible journey, and ultimately survived due to the help they received from Upstanders they encountered along the way.
This event is offered free to the public. Registration in advance is required.
