Join us for a fascinating talk with Audrey Reich, a member of the HHREC Advisory Board, as she shares the remarkable story of her mother’s childhood in Shanghai, China. Born into a Russian Jewish family that fled the Russian Revolution in search of safety and opportunity, her family’s journey took them from Harbin to Shanghai, where they experienced the Japanese invasion, the arrival of Jewish refugees from Europe, and the civil war between Nationalist and Communist forces.

Through treasured photos and documents, Audrey brings to life her mother’s experiences, the losses her family endured, and their forced displacement in 1950 when they had to seek refuge once again in Australia, the only country that would take them. Inspired by these stories, Audrey traveled with her family to China to uncover the remnants of Shanghai’s once-thriving Jewish community, a city that provided shelter to nearly 25,000 Jews during the Holocaust.

A dedicated storyteller, she often shares insights into her father’s past as a Polish Holocaust survivor, reflecting on how her parents’ shared histories of resilience, hope, and love shaped their lives together after meeting in 1956. Don’t miss this compelling exploration of personal and historical memory.
