Annual Appeal letter

“If I am not for me who will be? If I am only for me what am I?
If not now when?” Hillel

We live in a time where synagogues, Jewish day schools, and even preschools have armed guards at the front door.  We live in a time where every day occurrences such as going to school, the movies, a concert or a bar no longer feels safe.

We have been cautioned to learn the lessons from previous generations as history often repeats itself.  We fear that people have turned a deaf ear to the past and we are now are on the cusp of a frightening shift in our society.

A report by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) found that the number of antisemitic incidents was nearly 60 percent higher in 2017 than 2016, the largest single-year increase on record and the second highest number reported since ADL started tracking incident data in the 1970s (ADL website).

2018 has only been more terrifying with the single most deadly antisemitic act in our country’s history taking place at the Tree of Life Synagogue only a few weeks ago.

At the Holocaust & Human Rights Education Center we have one purpose – to break this cycle of prejudice.  Our work is not easy and what we do can be difficult to measure.  However, bigotry, intolerance and hatred must be confronted, not only in the context of antisemitism, but in all its manifestations – each and every time.  We must be relentless.

Please help be the catalyst for change and support our work.

We need your assistance to create Upstanders, individuals willing to stand up for what is right, even under the most difficult circumstances, and not be bystanders when injustices are taking place around them.

We need your help to ensure Survivors, Liberators and GenerationsForward speakers reach as many people as possible and share their accounts of existence during the Holocaust and bearing witness to the actions once assumed to be unfathomable by human beings.

We need your support to intervene when juvenile offenders commit bias crimes.  If we educate and change the mind of one offender, we can possibly change the lives of countless others.

Help us educate children, teachers and our community about the Holocaust and Human Rights issues so we can safeguard the future for our children, grandchildren, and generations to come.

Thank you for your time and support.

Sincerely,
Joseph Kaidanow                                             Millie Jasper
